Intro to To Kill a Mockingbird:
To Kill a Mockingbird has been on the Banned Book List more than once due to the subject matter which includes racism, mental illness and sexual assault but we will be studying this Classic novel in a sensitive and careful way with discussion about the language and attitudes present in it, so as to better understand human nature and what it takes to rise above elements in society that would seek to repress.

As a way of connecting to and understanding the very real race issue that is one element of To Kill a Mocking Bird we will be watching the Documentary Prom Night in Mississippi, 2008. *Warning - Please be aware the following documentary includes use of the "N" word, which is used as slang and in a derogatory context, but the film seeks to reveal the ignorance behind its use. Also, there is one disturbing image early in the series (episode 2 or 3). Please watch the clips with parental permission or in the context of the class where discussion can be had to unpack the message of the documentary and its connection to the novel.
