Activity 1 (Illustrator): Respond to the Teacher generated prompt listed below on your group's blog page:
- Find an image online that you think represents how the protagonist in your first chunk is thinking and feeling. Email the image to Ms. Trull along with your explanation of why the image works as a representation of the protagonists inner world and why you chose it .. use evidence (quotes or paraphrased excerpts) from the your novel to back up your conclusions and make sure you cite the image so your group can locate it if they want to. Don't forget to email Ms. Trull so she can post it for you .
- Respond to two of your group members' images with comments about how you interpreted the image they chose. What was your initial reaction to their image? What associations came to mind? Why do you think their image fits the protagonist's thoughts and feeling?
Activity 2 (Discussion Director) - Directing the discussion
As you read through Chunk 2 of your novel write down questions that occur to you, such as: Why did he do that? Who said this? What was his/her motive to say or do what he/ she did?
Then go back and fine tune your questions so that they are clear for the other members of your group to understand.
Eg. If you wrote, "Why did he do that?" initially, in your final question make sure you identify who the he is and what the that is. so Instead of writing, "Why did he do that?", you might write, "Why did Sam start the fire on page 222?".
Directly ask each member of the group one of your questions EG. Bethan - Why do you think that Sam started the fire on page 222?
Post any left over questions (if any) separately for all to respond to.
Answer the questions that were directed at you as replies to group member's posts.
Post one comment reflecting on the role that questions play in a.) generating a conversation and b.) helping you to understand the text?

- There should be at least 6 questions that you develop make sure there are 2 of each type - on the page, between the lines, off the page.
- Use the starter words who, what, when, where, why and how to help you get going, however, these questions should arise naturally as you read .... try to listen to the reader voice in your head.

Activity 3: Close Reading aka Deep Viewing or Annotation -
Go to the Annotating Text sidebar off of the Resources for Book Club Grade 9 tab and check out the annotation steps and sample annotated texts.
Take a look a quick video here on Annotation and then this one if you would still like to know more because it is more detailed.

Now you are ready to begin...
- Choose one page from your Chunk 3 reading selection that you found more difficult to understand. This is the page you will be annotating because one of the purposes of annotation is to help you as the reader understand what you are reading.
- Ask Ms. Trull to make a copy of your page so that you can annotate it or collect post if that is the way you want to go... either way Use different colours to indicate the type of annotation you are making... Eg. write in red when you are connecting the passage to a piece of media from your world (not the world of the novel) like a movie.
- Write a key in one corner of your page to indicate which colours code what types of annotation.
- Annotate!
- Take a picture of your Annotation and send it to me. I will post it for you.
- When you are done steps 1 - 5 write a one paragraph reflection comment on the ways in which the annotation task impacted your reading and understanding of the passage make reference including examples from the exercise itself.
Activity 4 - (Connector)
Provide a link to an article or some other form of media that connects the story (plot events, characters or themes) to the real world. In the comment section make a post where you make the cognitive connection between the info in the link provided by a BookBlogmate and events, characters, setting in the story.
